Sadie Douma Obituary

Sadie Marie Douma was born on April 1, 1932 to Steve and Mary (Bilsland) Overman in Primghar, IA.  She was their only child, and as a family they moved a lot.  They lived in various cities in Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon and California, before settling in Chandler, MN.  During those years, Sadie attended 14 different schools and graduated from the Chandler High School in 1951.

On August 14, 1953 Sadie and Louis Douma were married in the original Chandler Reformed Church.  Louis served in the army and was stationed at Fort Hood, TX, where their oldest son, Steve, was born. After his discharge in 1955, they moved to a farm east of Lake Wilson for a year, before moving to their home a mile south of Chandler.  In 2007, Sadie and Louis moved into Chandler.  Louis died on March 10, 2010.  Sadie remained in her home until 2014, when she became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center, where she lived until she died on March 31, 2020.

For a few years, Sadie worked part-time as a cleaning staff at Huisken Meat Center in Chandler. Sadie enjoyed crafts, but especially enjoyed crocheting, sewing and ceramics.  She also enjoyed crossword and word search puzzles.  They enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and friends.

Sadie and Louis wintered in LaFeria, TX for thirteen years.  She was a member of the Chandler Reformed Church and Chandler American Legion Auxilliary.

Sadie is survived by three sons, Steve “Red” Douma, Parkers Prairie, MN, Dave Douma, Chandler, MN and Don (Vickie) Douma, Chandler, MN; and daughter, Julie (Scott) Hartle, Chandler; nine grandchildren Brad Douma, Brandon (Robin) Douma, Brock (Nika) Douma;  Ariana Duin; Jennifer (Erwin) Cambara, Jeff Douma; Meghan (Philip) Soulek, Mitch (Brittani Roskamp) Hartle and Eli Ackerman and nine great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Kathleen (Robert) Dysthe, Slayton, MN and Beverly Brouwer, Sheldon, IA, and one brother-in-law, Doug Scott, Hackensack, MN.
